1. “Buồn” basically means sad as an adjective. Moreover, an extra word can be added after “buồn” to convey the different shades of sadness. The extra words usually do not have a specific meaning.

Eg: Sao nhìn em buồn hiu vậy? (Why do you look so sad?)

2. “Buồn + Verb” is a feeling that you need to do something which is hard to hold yourself back.

- buồn ngủ = buồn + sleep = sleepy

Eg: Tôi buồn ngủ quá! (I’m so sleepy)

- buồn cười = buồn + laugh = funny

Eg: Bộ phim hài đó buồn cười quá! (The comedy is so funny!)

- buồn nôn = buồn + throw up

Eg: Khi bị áp lực, tôi hay buồn nôn. (When being so stressed, I’m often nauseated)

3. “Buồn + Verb” is used in negative sentence. In this case, “buồn” means want or wish.

Eg: Vì bị mất tiền nên tôi chẳng buồn xem phim. (Because I lost money so I don’t want to watch movie).
